About
Delegate Douglas J “Doug” Skaff Jr. of South Charleston is a Democrat running for re-election to the House of Delegates in Kanawha County’s 35th District. Doug currently serves as Chairman of the Small Business & Economic Development Committee, Finance Committee, Roads & Transportation, Chair of the Legislative Oversight Commission on Workforce Investment for Economic Development. Skaff also Co-Chairs a Bi-Partisan Generation Legislature Caucus that he created for all newly elected legislators and current legislators between the age of 25-45 that want to work together regardless of party to move our state forward.
Skaff earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and master’s degree in industrial labor relations and business management in 2000 and 2002, respectively, from West Virginia University. During his time at WVU, he served as student body president – representing the interests of nearly 25,000 students.
While at West Virginia University, Skaff founded the Mountaineer Maniacs, the school’s highly-popular student athletic booster club, co-founded WVUp All Night, a weekend entertainment program for students, and led a Youth Summit with Senator Byrd for High School leaders.
All programs were developed in response to discussions held with students and the local community. Skaff worked with local officials, university staff, alumni, and students to develop a solution to combat student alcohol abuse on campus. Up All Night was designed to go beyond telling students what they shouldn’t do. Instead the program was developed to provide students with an attractive alternative to the plethora of bars and nightclubs in Morgantown.
The Mountaineer Maniacs, on the other hand, was formed in order to channel the energy and enthusiasm of WVU fans. Skaff also intended the program to change the negative images of students at athletic games and promote responsible behavior at all athletic events.
Like many younger West Virginians, Skaff left the Mountain State after he completed college for professional experience. For seven years he held a position with Owens Corning that had taken him across the country working in numerous cities. But when company officials said there was an open district manager position covering southern West Virginia, Skaff welcomed the chance to return home. Skaff was responsible for running the sales, distribution, marketing and management operations for a building material distribution company covering southern WV.
“Regardless of where my position took me, my roots have always been here,” Skaff said. “My family, friends and sense of community are what made me work hard to get here today.”
Skaff currently owns and serves as Managing Partner for his family owned business Building & Remodeling Warehouse in Nitro WV. A few years ago a national Chain decided it no longer wanted to operated its business in WV, Skaff and his father along with business partners decided to save the business, change the focus, and keep those West Virginian’s working.
