POLITICAL VIEWS
Doug Skaff Jr. is running for the West Virginia House of Delegates in Kanawha County’s 30th District.

“This campaign is about fresh ideas, new initiatives and the future of West Virginia,” Skaff said. “I want to use my past experiences to make this a better place to live for all current and future West Virginians.” I believe the skills I’ve developed in the business world, balancing interests and fostering growth, make me an ideal candidate to be a voice for Kanawha County. “

Skaff will focus on all aspects of education, providing for our seniors, economic growth, and job creation for recent graduates and those wanting to move home to West Virginia. He also intends on listening to the concerns and insights of Kanawha County residents to identify the critical issues and challenges facing the area today and tomorrow.

“I want to make it easier for West Virginians to stay in West Virginia,” Skaff said. “When searching for opportunity – I want people to turn to West Virginia. I don’t want people to be forced to travel outside our borders for a better education or a better job. If people want to stay close to their family and their roots, I want to work to help provide them that option.” I will strive to create opportunities to provide for a more educated and dedicated workforce.

“We need to create programs that focus on the retention of our graduates upon completion of their education. We have programs that give incentives to attend higher education schools in West Virginia but nothing to fill the void between graduation and their career paths. We must work together with the business leaders, public officials, teachers, and parents to help create incentives that will allow for more opportunities to hire our graduates and keep them in the state. “

Like many younger West Virginians, Skaff left the Mountain State after he completed college for professional experience. Over the past seven years his position with Owens Corning has taken him across the country working in numerous cities. But when company officials said there was an open district manager position covering Southern West Virginia Skaff welcomed the chance to return home.

“Regardless of where my position took me, my roots have always been here,” Skaff said. “My family, friends and sense of community are what made me work hard to get here today.”

A South Charleston native, Skaff today is responsible for running the sales, distribution, marketing and management operations for a building material distribution company covering southern WV.

Skaff earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and master’s degree in industrial labor relations and business management in 2000 and 2002, respectively, from West Virginia University. During his time at WVU, he served as student body president – representing the interests of nearly 25,000 students.

While at West Virginia University, Skaff founded the Mountaineer Maniacs, the school’s highly-popular student athletic booster club, co-founded WVUp All Night, a weekend entertainment program for students, and led a Youth Summit with Senator Byrd for High School leaders.

All programs were developed in response to discussions held with students and the local community. Skaff worked with local officials, university staff, alumni, and students to develop a solution to combat student alcohol abuse on campus. Up All Night was designed to go beyond telling students what they shouldn’t do. Instead the program was developed to provide students with an attractive alternative to the plethora of bars and nightclubs in Morgantown.

The Mountaineer Maniacs, on the other hand, was formed in order to channel the energy and enthusiasm of WVU fans. Skaff also intended the program to change the negative images of students at athletic games and promote responsible behavior at all athletic events.

Skaff currently serves as a member of the WVU Alumni Association’s Board of Governors. In 2005, the Association honored Skaff for his commitment and service to his alma mater. Skaff also serves as on West Virginia University’s Student Affairs Visiting Committee and participates in the Charleston Area Alliance, HBA – Home Builders Association, and Generation Charleston.

Skaff truly believes issues can become opportunities when the right people come together. Skaff says if elected he plans to represent the people of Kanawha County and will strive to be your voice for your future.
